Brownsville Will Get Nearly 900 New Affordable Apartments

These developments are all located on city-owned land and construction is expected to begin within the next 3 years

Nearly 900 affordable homes are set to be built over three separate sites in Brownsville, Brooklyn, the city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development announced on Thursday. All three projects will rise on city-owned land and be open to New Yorkers with a range of incomes. Each of these developments will also address critical needs in the neighborhood like economic development, arts and culture, and health.

The first of the three developments is known as the Brownsville Arts Center and Apartments (BACA). This project will be located on Rockaway Avenue and Chester Street, between East New York Avenue a­­­­­­nd Pitkin Avenue, and will bring 230 apartments to the neighborhood. They will be geared toward extremely low-income and formerly homeless New Yorkers. The building will also feature a host of arts and culture components like a black box theater, a music school, a performing arts school, and a media lab. The project will be developed by Blue Sea Development Company, Gilbane Development Company and Artspace Projects.

At the intersection of Christopher Avenue and Glenmore Avenue, the Glenmore Manor Apartments will bring an additional 230 affordable units to the neighborhood including homes for low-income seniors. This particular project will be focused on economic development and will feature the the Brooklyn Cooperative Federal Credit Union, and an outpost of the Central Brooklyn Economic Development Corporation, which will champion young entrepreneurs and small businesses. A sit-down restaurant is also part of this project that’s being developed by African American Planning Commission, Inc., Brisa Builders, and Lemle & Wolff.

The largest of the three developments, Livonia 4, will bring 420 apartments to a series of sites along Livonia Avenue between Powell Street and Mother Gaston Boulevard. This health-focused development will also include a supermarket, a cafe, a rooftop greenhouse, community gardens, a new senior center, and a family recreation center. The project is being developed by Radson Development, Community Solutions and Catholic Charities Progress of Peoples Development Corporation.

All three projects are part of the larger neighborhood revitalization effort called the Brownsville Plan, which seeks to add 2,500 affordable homes throughout the neighborhood with an investment of $1 billion that will also address needs like health and safety, education, arts, and retail, among others. Construction on these three new developments is expected to get underway within the next three years, according to the Wall Street Journal.
